It holds the Crown Jewels. The tower is always placed under the vigilance of forty "Yeoman Warders" armed with a halberd, and recognizable with their famous uniforms dating from the time of Tudors: round hat and blue or red costume, stamped the initial ones of the reigning sovereign. These men and women, whom one also calls "Beefeater" recruited oneself formerly among the small holders (yeomen) country. Nowadays, veterans of the army do this.
Because of an old legend, several large crows whose wings were cut down, are fed in the tower, at the expense of the government by a "Master of the Crows", because it is known that as long the crows remain near the tower, England will be protected from any invasion. The names of the corbels which currently live the tower are Hardey, Thor, Odin, Gwyllum, Cedric, Hugin and Munin.

The City/ La "City"

The City of London is a geographically-small city within Greater London, England. The City of London is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages, and hence it is now only a tiny part of the larger London metropolis.

The City of London is now a major business and commercial centre. It is often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km²) in area. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 500,000.

The City itself has two independent enclaves within it — Inner Temple and Middle Temple. These two areas form part of the City and Ceremonial county, but are not governed by the City of London Corporation. The Corporation governs the rest of the City and also owns various open spaces (parks, forests and commons) in and around London, including most of Epping Forest.
A lot of skyscrapers have been built for the past years or are going to be built. The architecture of the City will change a lot in the coming years.

Big Ben

The name Big Ben was first given to a 14.5 tonne (16 ton) hour bell, cast on 10 April 1856 in Stockton-on-Tees by Warner's of Cripplegate. The bell was never officially named, but the legend on it records that the commissioner of works, Sir Benjamin Hall, was responsible for the order; another theory is that the bell may have been named after heavyweight boxer Benjamin Caunt who was popular at the time. There's also a story that the bell was to be called "Victoria" in honour of Queen Victoria, but the ceremonial speeches went on so long that some joker shouted out "Oh just call it Big Ben and have done with it!" and the name stuck. It is also believed that the bell was named after the prize boxer Benjamin Brain of late 1700's also nicknamed "Big Ben"

un peu de musique .../ some music ...

Dear pupils,

Its installation

goes back up in 1753 and was made possible thanks to the doctor Sir Hans Sloane who bequeathed all his collection to the English nation. This inheritance was later enriched by several big collections of books(pounds) and manuscripts. The museum opened its doors to the public for the first time on January 15th, 1759. Its structure has since evolved a lot and its collections changed too notably by the transfer of certain rooms to other museums (mainly the Museum of Natural Science and the Museum of Natural History). In 2003 it shelters more than 6 million objects since the dawn of time(weather) until our days. Regrettably most of these collections are stored in the basement due to the lack of space.
The entrance has always been free, except for a few months in 1972.
It is only in 1963, that the part dedicated to the natural history became autonomous under the name of Natural History Museum.

Westminster Abbey
